The Bangladesh U-16 eve football team returned home early Tuesday from Myanmar after taking part in the AFC U16 Women’s Championship 2019 qualifiers round 2.
Bangladesh Football Federation (BFF) women’s wing chairman Mahfuza Akter Kiron and BFF general secretary Abu Nayeem Sohag welcomed the U-16 team at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport at here at 1 am. Bangladesh girls finish as Group B runners-up with six points while China emerged champions with nine points.
Bangladesh made a flying start in the tournament crushing Philippines by 10-0 goals in their group opening match and edged past host Myanmar by 1-0 goal in the second match to ensure their final round.
The girls in red and green however conceded a 0-3 goal defeat to Asian powerhouse China in their third and last match to finish as group runners-up.
Both Bangladesh and China have qualified for the finals of AFC U-16 Women’s Championship 2019 scheduled to be held from September 15-28 in Thailand.
The top three teams from the AFC will go to play in the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup 2020 to be played in either France or India.
The girls have been working harder and harder in the training ground under the supervision of head coach Golam Rabbani Choton and technical and strategic director Paul Thomas Smalley and it paid dividends which have been manifested in the recent results.
The whole nation will be looking at the U16 women’s national team to fly the flag of Bangladesh at the world stage for the first time ever at any level.
