Three people, reportedly members of Border Guard Bangladesh or BGB, have been accused of raping two teenaged girls of the Tripura ethnic minority group in Bandarban’s Lama.
Officials at the local BGB camp, however, claim they do not have any member with the names Naeyk ‘Robiul’, and soldiers ‘Maruf’ and ‘Sumon’ as mentioned in the case started at Lama Police Station by one of the victim’s brother on Thursday night.
Bandarban Superintendent of Police Zakir Hossain Majumdar said they were investigating the allegation.
Sub-Inspector Md Abdullah has been put on the case. No-one was arrested until Friday night.
Medical tests of the two alleged victims, aged 17 and 14, were held at Bandarban General Hospital on Friday afternoon.
Police did not allow the media to speak to the girls who live in adjacent homes.
Their brothers told the reporters that a female neighbour called the two girls out around 10pm on Wednesday.
The families did not know where the girls were taken, they said.
After a tense night, the two girls were found at a nearby jungle, their brothers said.
The girls told the families that BGB members violated them and threatened them with death if they spoke out, according to the brothers.
The authorities would form a team to conduct the medical test after collecting samples from the girls in the afternoon, Bandarban Civil Surgeon Aung Swe Prue Marma told the media.
Naikkhyangchharhi 11 BGB commander Lt Col Asaduzzaman told the reporters that members of the Banafur BGB camp at Fansiakhali were on duty at the local market on Wednesday night.
“They were not supposed to go to the locality. And we don’t have any member going by the names mentioned in the case,” he said.
He also said they would investigate the allegation though he believed it was a ‘false propaganda’ about the border force.
Srimonto Tripura, a leader of the Bandarban chapter of Tripura Students’ Forum, said they would organise a human-chain protest and a procession against the incident and demand justice.
