BCL infighting, 20 held: Two sacks of locally-made arms recovered from CU halls

Police in an overnight drive arrested 20 Bangladesh Chattra League (BCL) activists and recovered two sacks of locally-made weapons from two students’ dormitories of Chittagong University on Wednesday night.
Police with the help of Chittagong University authority conducted raids at Shahjalal and Suhrawardy Halls following clashes between two rival groups of BCL on the campus.
Police conducted the raids from 8.00pm to 10.00pm.
“We recovered a total of two sacks packed with machetes, knives and iron rods during raids in two varsity halls,” said Moshiuddowla Reza, Additional Superintendent of Chittagong Police.
He said they also detained at least 20 students from the halls. “Police also sized five motor bikes during the raids.”
Proctor Ali Asgor also confirmed The New Nation about recovery of arms from the dormitories.
“Rival BCL groups have locked in clashes in the last two days. The varsity authority cooperated with police to carry out raids so that none can create anarchy on the varsity campus,” he added.
Earlier on Tuesday, a clash broke out between the followers of CU unit BCL leaders Mizanur Rahman Bipul and Mansur Alam at the university, leaving 7 students injured.
The two groups again engaged in clash on Wednesday evening. They were seen taking up positions in their halls with sharp weapons making the situation tense on the campus.
Later, police conducted raids in the dormitories to detain the BCL demonstrators.
