165 gold bars recovery: Two quizzed for misappropriation

The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) on Monday interrogated two persons in connection with the misappropriation of 165 gold bars recovered at Rampura.
A team of the ACC led by its Deputy Director Jatan Kumar grilled Mahin and Somir Biswas, suspected members of organised gold smuggling gang.
Before it, the same team questioned Rampura Thana’s Sub-Inspector Manjurul Islam, its constables Akkas Chowdhury and Wahedul Islam, police source Mahfuz Alam
Roni and a driver M Sajib Sikder in this regard.
On March 13, the alleged accused recovered a private car from Rampura area with 235 gold bars inside it. But they deposited 70 bars only to the police station, distributing 165 bars among themselves.
But the recovery of 235 gold bars being reported in some national dailies, the Detective Branch of Police arrested seven persons including two smugglers. It filed a case as per approval of the ACC.
ACC Officer M A Rashid sent the case to the CMM Court seeking authorisation of investigation. As per the court order, ACC Deputy Director Jatan Kumar is now investigating the matter.
Earlier, ACC questioned Officers-in-Charge (OCs) of Rampura Thana Kripa Sindhu Bala and Nasim Ahmed and Sub-Inspector (SI) Moniruzzaman and former Second Officer Quamruzzaman.
The allegation has also been raised against an assistant commissioner (AC) of police that he tried to grab the gold bars from the thana.
