Two people, including a madrasa student, died of dengue in Sylhet and Faridpur, while 360 more patients were admitted to different hospitals across Bangladesh in the last 24 hours. The deceased were identified as Shahanur Mia, 16, son of Mutalib Mia of Sujanagar village in Dirai Municipality of Sunamganj; and Sirajul Islam, 40, a fruit trader, son of Felu Sheikh from Narandia village in Saltha upazila of the district.
Sylhet’s Women Medical College Director Ferdous said Shahanur was hospitalised on Friday with dengue but the family members took him back from the hospital at night.
Sylhet Civil Surgeon Himanshu Lal Roy said the family members were taking him to Dhaka for better treatment but he died around Saturday noon.
Sirajul died at Faridpur Medical College Hospital on Saturday morning.
Kamda Prasad Saha, Director of Faridpur Medical College Hospital, said that Sirajul was admitted to Shibchar Upazila Hospital on Sunday last with symptoms of dengue. Physical condition deteriorating, he was shifted to Faridpur Medical College Hospital on Monday last.
Ten people so far died of the mosquito-borne disease in Faridpur Medical College Hospital since the beginning of the year, he added.
A total of 202 patients are under treatment at the hospital, while 30 new patients were admitted in 24 hours till Saturday morning.
Till 8am on Saturday, 102 new patients were admitted in Dhaka and 258 in districts outside Dhaka.
Dengue, a mosquito-borne virus, spreads among human bodies through the Aedes mosquito.
The Health Emergency Operation Centre and Control Room at the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) in a press release issued on Saturday said that the number of patients currently undergoing treatment in government and private hospitals in the country was 1,709.
A total of 81 dengue patients died across Bangladesh from January 1 till September 28, according to their own data. However, the unofficial death toll is reported to be over 167 so far.
As many as 629 patients were currently receiving treatment in 41 government and private hospitals in Dhaka, whereas 1,080 people were undergoing treatment outside Dhaka, the DGHS data said.
Since January 1 till September 28, as many as 87,263 dengue patients received treatment.
Of them, a total of 85,323 have been released after treatment.
