Two people have been killed in an alleged gunfight between the law enforcers and unknown miscreants at capital Dhaka’s Jatrabari on Saturday evening, police said.
The deceased were identified as Salauddin, 32, and Jewel, 27.
Salauddin was a robber, while Jewel used to work as his accomplice, Elias Sharif, Deputy Commissioner (DC) of Police (Wari division), said.
He said that they were arrested from Kajla’s Nayanagar area at noon on Saturday. Police had already started a drive to recover firearms based on the information provided by them.
Sensing the presence of the law enforcers, the gang members started shooting into the law enforcer, who also fired back in self-defence.
DC said Salahuddin and Jewel died on the spot during the shootout.
There are several cases including one for murder against them at Jatrabari Police Station, DC said.
Later police recovered the bodies and sent them to Dhaka Medical College Hospital for autopsy.
Salauddin, was accused in at least three murder cases and convicted in the several cases, he added.
The official claimed that they seized a pistol, a revolver and several bullets from the area after the ‘shootout’.
