Two people including a businessman were killed and former UP chairman who was also a freedom fighter died from police panic in Jessore on Saturday night and early Sunday.
In the first incident, businessman Parimal Paul, 45 was stabbed to death by unidentified muggers at Dolkhola intersection in Monirampur upazila headquarters at around 10:30 pm on Saturday. The muggers took away bagful money from his brother Ratan Paul who is also a trader from the spot.
Abul Hossain, a night guard of the area who is also an eyewitness told that the incident took place as three owners of Paul Brothers- Ratan Paul, Kartik Paul and Parimal Paul, sons of Mahadev Chandra Paul of Monirampur upazila headquarters , tried to prevent two muggers from taking away a bagful money, got off their microbus in front of their residence at Dolkhola intersection, closing the business outlet at another area of the town, at around 10:30 pm on Saturday. The muggers took away the bag of money at one stage stabbing one of the businessmen. They also attempted to attack others including the night guard hurling several crude bombs.
The wounded businessman was rushed to Jessore General Hospital where he died at around 2am on Sunday.
Dr Abdullah -Al – Mamun, medical officer of the hospital confirmed the death of the businessman due to bleeding.
Mokarram Hossain, officer in-charge, Monirampur police station told that the muggers took away a bag which had papers no money although they wanted to mug money. ‘The police were trying to catch the miscreants,’ he added.
No case was lodged in till filing of the report.
In the second incident, elderly freedom fighter Motleb Biswas, 71, who served as chairmanship for 27 years died from massive cardiac arrest as he tried to flee suspected from police raids at around 11:45pm on Saturday.
Jesmin Nahar Barsha, a daughter of the former UP chairman told that her father Motleb Biswas died as he got out of his residence for a safer place to flee from police raids after the police made raids at her residence to detain her husband Ashraf Ali. ‘The police raided out resident at around 11pm on Saturday,’ she added.
Nazmunnahar Poly, another daughter of the dead told that her father died around 300-400 metres off his residence at around 11:45pm.
Azmal Huda, officer in-charge, Kotwali police station, however, said the police did not carry out raids at Panchbaria, the village of the former UP chairman.
Aninda Islam Amit, assistant organising secretary, Bangladesh Nationalist Party, central committee told that the elderly freedom fighter died from police panic as the police raided several places under Ichhali union. ‘We are unfortunate that a freedom fighter had to flee from police arrest,’ he added.
In another incident, Abdul Wahab, 75, night guard of Robi- Airtell mobile phone tower was strangled to death early Sunday, Masud Karim, officer in-charge, Jhikargachha police station told . ‘The miscreants committed theft at the tower,’ he added.
