Court Correspondent :
The Special Judge Court-5 of Dhaka yesterday adjourned the hearing in two graft cases against BNP Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia and others till June 22.
Judge Md Akhtaruzzaman of the court passed the order on Thursday granting a time petition filed by Khaleda Zia’s lawyer Abdur Rezzak Khan. The counsel told the court he would not be able to conclude the cross-examination of Investigation Officer Harunur Rashid in Zia Charitable Trust graft case on Thursday as he is not
physically fit due to Chikunguniya. He sought an early conclusion.
The defence counsel partially interrogated the Investigation Officer on Thursday morning and the Judge wrapped up yesterday’s session in 30 minutes and set the next date in presence of Khaleda Zia. The BNP Chairperson appeared before the court at about 11.45 am and left the court premises at around 12.10 noon.
The court also set the same day for submitting statement in self-defence by the BNP Chief in Zia Orphanage Trust graft case.
The ACC on July 3, 2008, filed the Zia Orphanage Trust graft case with Ramna Model Police Station, accusing Khaleda Zia, her son Tarique Rahman and four others for embezzling Taka 21 million brought from abroad for orphans.
On the other hand, the anti-graft body lodged the Zia Charitable Trust graft case against Khaleda Zia and three others with Tejgaon Police Station on August 8, 2011, for embezzling Taka 31.5 million from the Trust.
