A court here on Sunday sentenced two drug peddlers to five years rigorous imprisonment (RI) for keeping drugs on December 23, 2013.
The court also fined them Tk 5,000, in default, to suffer one year RI more. They were absconding since long.
The convicted are Md. Zoynal Bangal, 42, son of late Iman Ali of Zirengachha Pashimpara village under Sharsha Upazila and Mazeda Begum, 38, wife of Md. Bayezedur Rahman of Jhapa Purbapara village under Monirampur upazila in Jessore district.
Court sources said, on secret information, Detective Branch of Police of Khulna district arrested the duo along with 10 bottles of contraband phensidyl syrup from the East Rupsha ghat area on December 23, 2013.
DB Sub-Inspector (SI) Md. Rezaul Karim filed a case with Rupsha Police Station. After filing the case police submitted charge sheet against them.
Special Tribunal No-2 Judge Md. Nurul Islam handed down the verdict after examining the witnesses and evidence.
