Two get life for killings

A court in Barisal sentenced a husband to death for killing wife by throwing to river from launch on Tuesday.
The death sentenced lone accused was Sohrab Akon, 40, son of late Lal Mia Akon, from Toyka village under Muladi upazila of Barisal.
Adib Ali, first additional district and session judge of Barisal handed down this verdict after examining 11 witnesses and other evidences in presence of the accused.
The court also fined the accused Tk 50 thousand.
Advocate Khan Wahiduddin Ahmed, assistant public prosecutor of the court, said accused Sohrab Akon married Mili Begum following love affairs. On October 20, 2007 Sohrab brought seven-month pregnant wife Mili to Dhaka telling to consult doctor.
Then on October 22 Mili died after falling from launch on way to return home with husband.
About eight-month later, on May 10, 2008, Mini Begum, sister of dead Mili Begum, as complainant, lodged a case with Muladi police station accusing Sohrab for killing Mili by throwing her to river from launch.
Sub Inspector Abdur Rahim, investigation officer of the case, filed charge sheet against Sohrab on November 1, 2008.
Man gets 17-yr jail in arms case in Barisal
UNB from Barisal adds: A special court here on Monday convicted a man and sentenced him to 17 years’ imprisonment for possessing firearms and ammunition. The convict was identified as Sujon Sardar, son of Habib Sardar, a resident of Charamandi area in Bakerganj upazila.
According to the prosecution, tipped off, a team of police arrested Sujon along with a light gun, a shutter gun and three rounds of bullet from Harinapasha area under Airport Police Station on January 24, 2013.
