Two mild earthquakes within 10 minutes shook Sylhet on Monday evening. The tremors were felt around 6:29 pm and 6:39 pm.
Panic spread across the city as tremors were felt twice in 10 minutes. After the first mild tremor, people came out of the house after the second tremor which was stronger than the first tremor. However, no casualties were reported.
Confirming the earthquake, Sayeed Ahmed Chowdhury, a senior meteorologist at the Sylhet Meteorological Office, said the quake was felt twice in two minutes. The “level and the epicenter” were not known on the immediate Richter Scale. Work is underway to determine its epicenter, he added.
Earlier, at least seven earthquakes were felt in Sylhet on May 29, however, the Sylhet Meteorological Office recorded four quakes. The magnitudes of the quakes were 3, 4.1, 2.8 and 4.6.
The epicenter of the earthquakes was in Sylhet. Of these, the epicenter of three is within 13 km. The quake was not felt in many parts of Sylhet due to its small radius.
Meanwhile, Sylhet City Corporation (SCC) Mayor Ariful Haque Chowdhury directed to keep 24 risky market-buildings in Sylhet closed for 10 days due to the continuous earthquakes. SCC has issued several warnings about this.
