A two-day international workshop on cyber crimes and safe internet began in capital to find ways to curb threats and crimes in the cyber space.
Speaker Dr Shirin Sharmin Choudhury inaugurated the event as chief guest in city’s Hotel Le Meridien on Tuesday.
Commonwealth Telecommunication Organization (CTO) has organized the workshop titled “Digital Bangladesh: Focusing on Cybercrime, Safe Internet and Broadband” with the cooperation of Posts and Telecommunications Division and Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC).
Speaking on the occasion, Shirin Sharmin said the government is determined to secure personal information and security that is why now the cyber security has been appeared as one of the important issue to it.
Mentioning that the government has put concentration to strengthen further the telecommunication and cyber security in the country, she said Prime Minister’s ICT Adviser Sajeeb Wazed Joy is working relentlessly to make the “digital Bangladesh” campaign successful within the stipulated time.
Shirin Sharmin urged the authorities concerned to ensure cyber security as every people of the country are getting the touch of digitization.
State Minister for Posts and Telecommunications Tarana Halim spoke on the occasion as special guest while posts and telecommunication division secretary Shyam Sundar Sikdar and BTRC acting chairman Brig Gen (retd) Ahsan Habib Khan addressed the opening ceremony.
CTO Secretary General Shola Taylor presented keynote “Tackling Cybercrime: A global imperative for a safe Internet” in the workshop.
In his speech, Tarana Halim said they would sit with the social networking site facebook this month to identify the militancy and objectionable contents.
She said they would also take necessary measure to stop the pages which have been spreading militancy and objectionable contents from abroad.
Tarana Halim said every social networking site is being operated with its own terms and policy, so they have to keep in mind that any part of the policy would not go against the law of the country.
In the two-day workshop, nine sessions will be held where facebook India and South Asia public policy director Ankhi Das, INTERPOL national review manager Steve Honiss, ITU senior adviser Sameer Sharma, GSMA public policy director Dominique lazanski, UNODC global cyber crime prevention activities chief Neil J Walsh and CTO secretariat legal adviser Shadrach Hauna are scheduled to speak on the issues.
High officials of law enforcing and security agencies, representatives of mobile phone operators and officials of posts and telecommunications division and BTRC have joined the workshop.
In the workshop, internet safety, role of regulator in preventing cyber crimes and best practices, trial and investigation of cyber crimes: local and international perspective, Over-the-Top (OTT) service and barriers, role of mobile phone operators and internet service providers in thwarting cyber crimes as well would be discussed.
Besides, a special session on “Safe Surfing for Children” would be organized with the participation of hundreds of students of different schools and college.
