Two banned arms seized at HSIA

The Customs Intelligence and Investigation Directorate on Sunday seized two Walther PP pistols from air cargo at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in the city, according to a press release. The seizure came as part of 33- day long operation initiative ‘Operation Iren-2’, aimed at countering trafficking in
small arms and light weapons. Acting on a tip-off, the customs intelligence conducted the drive.
The intelligence team examined the arms, said to be imported from Italy, stored in the air cargo unit-1 strong room of the airport, while airfreight team of Custom Intelligence, Dhaka correspondent of Customs House, RAB and other intelligence organisation members were present on the spot.
The regional intelligence liaison office of World Customs Organization’s announced that the operation was conducted as part of the Irene security operation. Twenty-two countries in the Asia-Pacific region, including Bangladesh, are participating in this campaign where the Customs Directorate is working as a liaison office for the operation.
