A Narayanganj court has sent Twaki Mancha leader Rafiur Rabbi to jail in a cheque fraud case.
Additional District and Sessions Judge Miazi Sahidul Alam Chowdhury ordered him to jail on Tuesday when he surrendered before it with a bail prayer.
A court had sentenced Rabbi to one year in prison and fined him Tk 21 million in 2014 in a cheque fraud case filed by Jalal Uddin of North Chashrha in April 2012.
The trial court recently issued arrest warrant on him after the High Court had upheld the punishment in the appeal verdict. Rahim said Rabbi had approached the court seeking bail, but the judge sent him to jail after the hearing. Rabbi is the father of schoolboy Tanvir Mohammad Twaki who was abducted and murdered in 2013. He has been accusing ruling party leader Shamim Osman and his family members of the murder.
Jalal, who filed the cheque fraud case, is uncle-in-law of Shamim Osman. Rabbi was also accused in two more cases over default on a loan of Tk 23 million taken from Sonali Bank for his apparel factory, Sign Neatwear. Last year, the Election Commission rejected his nomination papers in the by-election of Narayanganj-5 due to this loan-default case.
