Railway Minister Nurul Islam Sujon has said the recent fatal collision between two intercity trains in Brahmanbaria was caused by the negligence of duty of the Turna Nishita Train’s loco master Taser Uddin, and two other staff.
The minister revealed the findings based on the three probe reports in a press briefing at Railway Bhaban in Dhaka on Wednesday afternoon.
The other two are Assistant Loco Master Opu Dey and Guard Md Abdur Rahman.
“All the three are responsible for the accident that claimed the lives of 17 passengers and injuring many others,” the minister said.
On November 12, Dhaka-bound Turna Nishita, coming from Chittagong, rammed into Chittagong-bound Udayan Express, coming from Sylhet, near Mondobagh Railway Station in Kasba of Brahmanbaria around 2:45am.
The accident left 16 people, including five children, dead on spot and more than 70 others injured. One of the injured later died under treatment.
Minister Nurul Islam presented five proposals submitted by the committees to avoid such accidents in future.
The proposals include setting up of CCTV cameras to monitor loco master, assistant loco master and guards, imparting training to railway officials, to fill up the vacant posts with trained hands, to introduce technology based closed user group apps to connect and maintain station and train communication and to introduce automatic train stoppage system.
The three probe committees were constituted jointly by the Railway Ministry, Bangladesh Railway and local district administration.
So far, the death toll went up to 17, the minister said.
