Turmeric growers in Gopalganj are expecting bumper production of the crop this season due to favourable weather condition and timely supply of agricultural imputes by local agriculture office.
Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE), Gopalganj sources said, a total of 2250 bighas of land have been brought under turmeric cultivation this year in five upazilas of the district.
The growers reap profit of about Tk. 1,40,000 to 1,45,000 from per local bigha of land by cultivating the hybrid variety of crop.
The farmers are cultivating the spice widely as it is the part and parcel of daily cooking food.
While visiting a field in Ghosherchar Paschimpara under Sadar upazila it was found that farmers are working in the field with smiling face.
According to agriculture office, the hybrid variety of the crop has been cultivated instead of the local one this season due to more production in the shortest period of time.
Abdus Samad Laskor (55) of village Ghosherchar Paschimpara under Gopalganj Sadar upazila said ‘I have cultivated 55 discimal of land this season spending about Tk 30,000 and I expect 120 maunds od production from my turmeric land which market price at Tk 1,44,000 (Per Kg. above Tk. 1200) told the F.E during visit his field.
Sagor Mollah (30). another farmer of village Char Manikdha under sadar upazila said “1 have cultivated turmeric origin of Drimla Sundari on 0.20 acres of land spending Tk 11,000 and I expect Taka 50,000 to Taka 55000 as profit from my turmeric land if the weather condition remains favorable and the present market rate remains stable”.

A total of 450 bighas of land have been brought under this cultivation in Sadar upazila of the district. Where above 600 farmers including male and female involved in the cultivation, he added.
