Turkish Ambassador Mustafa Osman Turan on Wednesday said that his country eagerly wants to expand trade and commerce in textile and jute sector in Bangladesh.
“Bangladesh has a very bright future and its economy is growing fast. Turkish investors are keen to invest in Bangladesh as it offers attractive incentives for foreign investors,” he said during a curtsy call on Textiles and Jute Minister Golam Dastagir Gazi at the latter’s office at Secretariat in the capital.
The Ministry Secretary Lokman Hossain Miah was also present during the meeting.
Various issues of bilateral interest including economic progress of Bangladesh were discussed in the meeting, a press release said.
Dastagir Gazi said Bangladesh also sincerely believes that Turkey is a friendly country of Bangladesh and hoped Turkey will invest more in expanding trade in textiles and jute sector. Bangladesh wants to export more versatile jute products to Turkey in the future, the minister added.
Osman Turan said, “Bangladesh produces the best quality jute in the world. Attractive versatile jute products are being produced from this jute and are exporting different countries. Turkey is one of the main export destinations.”
The deep-rooted relations are prevailing between Bangladesh and Turkey. Bangladesh’s priority would be to attract economic cooperation and foreign direct investment from Turkey.
Their bilateral trade volume reached $936 million in 2018, with the ready-made garment sector taking the lead. However, Bangladesh has emerged as Turkey’s second-largest trade partner in South Asia after India.
Although the bilateral trade volume has hovered around $1 billion since 2010, Turkey wants it to go up to $2 billion to $3 billion.
Bangladesh has already approached Turkey for a proficient trade agreement (PTA) to expand the economic partnership, as the EU vetoed the earlier initiative of the free trade agreement (FTA) in 2012.
