Tupi (cap) making has brought significant change in the financial condition of thousands of poor women at different villages under Gangachara upazila in the district.
Tariqul Islam Tareq an entrepreneur of Gangachara upazila has created job opportunities for thousands of destitute women of the region by setting up a Tupi factory in the upazila. Sources said around 3000 extreme poor women of different areas in the upazila are knitting tupis for the factory of Tareq and thus they are supporting their poverty- stricken families with their income.
Apart from local demand, they also export their products abroad, he also said. Per month his factory exports around 15,000 tupis to Oman, Tariqul added.
Amena Begum (32) wife of Hakim Mia at Mandrain village of the upazila said that she had been passing her days in extreme poverty even 4 years ago. Her husband was a day labourer. It was much difficult to maintain her impoverished family of six members with the meager amount of income of her husband.
Then she took training on tupi making and within a week she learned the skill of making stylish tupi. Thus she found the way to contribute significantly to her family income.
Tariqul Islam, the tupi factory owner said tupi making has become a blessing for the extreme poor women of different areas in the upazila as it has provided them a way to earn their living.Due to enchanting beauty and extraordinary designs, demand for the tupis manufactured at his factory is on the increase, he also said.
He also stressed the need for government’s patronisation for further expansion of the business.
