British MP Tulip Siddiq has resigned as a shadow minister following Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn’s decision to back legislation paving the way for the UK’s departure from the EU, according to the local media.
Tulip, the shadow education minister of early years, sent her resignation letter to Labour leader Corbyn on Thursday. Corbyn has imposed a three-line whip on his MPs telling them to back the newly published bill. This orders all MPs to back the Government when the
bill is debated in the House over two days next week, according to The Sun. The European Union (Notification of Withdrawal) Bill has been produced after the Supreme Court ruled legislation would be necessary.
British newspaper the Independent quoted Tulip from the letter: “I have always been clear – I do not represent Westminster in Hampstead and Kilburn, I represent Hampstead and Kilburn in Westminster.
“…I feel that the most effective place for me to counter Theresa May’s hard Brexit is from the backbenches,” she added, according to the Independent. Bangladeshi-origin Tulip was first elected in May 2015 and appointed to the Labour frontbench in Corbyn’s reshuffle following his reelection in September last year.
About 75 percent of her constituents voted remain in the EU referendum.
Corbyn said Labour MPs would face a three-line whip to vote in favour of the bill, BBC reported.
It added that he said he understood the “pressures and issues” members faced, but called on them to “unite” around “important issues” and “not to block Article 50 but to make sure it goes through next week”.
Frontbench members of parties are generally expected to resign from their post if they decided to defy a three-line whip, according to BBC. Prime Minister Theresa May has promised to begin the formal process of quitting the European Union, under Article 50 of the Lisbon Treaty, by the end of March.
