About 367 workers of Tuba Garments received their two months’ arrear salaries on Wednesday, said officials of Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA).
The Association started distributing the salaries among the workers at its Karwan Bazar office from 11:05am on the day.
“The payment will be continued on Thursday also,” said BGMEA president Atiqul Islam.
He further said, they are fully prepared to pay wages, though they are not authorized to pay. They are just doing this in response to the humanity.
Terming garment industries as the backbone of country’s economy, he also urged the people not to make politics with this.
Earlier in the morning, workers of five apparel units of Tuba Group, who remained unpaid for three months, thronged to the BGMEA headquarters for collecting their due salary and Eid bonus.
The Tuba Sramik Sangram Committee (TSSC) has called for daylong observance of strike across the country on Saturday in demand of payment of their three months’ arrear salaries and Eid bonus. They will also stage demonstrations in the country’s industrial areas on Thursday and Friday to gather support in favour of their fast-unto-death programme.
Bangladesh Garment Sramik Unity Forum’s President Moshrefa Mishu said this on Wednesday, adding that a handful of workers, cleaners and guards received the salaries and allowances for two months only from the BGMEA authority on Wednesday.
