President Trump seems to be showing uncharacteristic restraint as he remains silent about the Oscars on Twitter despite being goaded by the ceremony’s host.
Stars last night lined up to slam the President, who is famous for his outspoken rants on Twitter and feuds with stars such as Meryl Streep and Rosie O’Donnell. Host Jimmy Kimmel tweeted Trump while on stage, asking ‘are you up’ followed by ‘merylsayshi’ as the actress received a nomination, despite not being in a movie this year. Trump, pictured at the annual Governors Dinner at the White House last night, has still not reacted to the heavy criticism he received at the Oscars last night But Trump, who has all but live tweeted the Oscars in the past, has still said nothing about the ceremony, in which he was hammered by Hollywood’s elite.
Last night, he tweeted: ‘Big dinner with
Governors tonight at White House. Much to be discussed, including healthcare,’ but made no reference to the event. Kimmel took aim at President Trump, trashing him throughout the night, starting with his opening monologue.
He joked that the Academy Awards were being watching across the globe ‘in more than 225 countries that now hate us’. Best Foreign Language Film was won by The Salesman, but Iranian director Asghar Farhadi boycotted the awards due to the controversial Trump ‘travel ban’.
Kimmel added: ‘I want to say thank you to President Trump… remember last year when it seemed the Oscars were racist? That’s gone, thanks to him.’ He then took to the President’s favorite medium – Twitter – to write: ‘Hey @realDonaldTrump u up?’ and ‘@realDonaldTrump #Merylsayshi.’ He later took aim again at Trump, calling on the crowd to give a ‘highly over-rated’ Meryl Streep a standing ovation for her 20 Oscar nominations throughout her career. It’s a reference to the long-running feud between the President and Streep, who he called ‘the most overrated actress in Hollywood’ on Twitter after she attacked him during a Golden Globes speech last month. ‘One actress has stood the test of time for her many uninspiring and overrated performances. This is Meryl’s 20th Oscar nomination… she wasn’t even in a movie this year, we just wrote her name in out of habit,’ Kimmel said. He then said to Streep: ‘Nice dress by the way… Is that an Ivanka?,’ a sly jibe at the President’s wife’s troubled fashion label, which was dumped by department store Nordstrom this month.
Kimmel joked that Trump would tweet about all of the Oscar winner’s acceptance speeches ‘in all caps during his 5am bowel movement tomorrow’, but so far he has said nothing on the ceremony.
