Paying rich tributes to the late poet Sufia Kamal, speakers on Monday said moral pressure should be exerted on policymakers to ensure equal rights of women in every sphere of life.
To mark the 105th birth anniversary of poet Sufia Kamal, they came up with the remarks while speaking at a memorial lecture on Sufia Kamal and Women’s Movement of the 21st century’ at Bangla Academy in the city yesterday. Bangladesh Mahila Parishad organised the programme.
They said, imbued with spirit of Sufia Kamal’s
ideology, people from all walks of life will have to come forward in order to stand against the sectarian violence.
Inspired by Begum Rokeya, Sufia Kamal had practised literature and spent her life for welfare of people and society, they said.
Professor Nasim Akhter Hossain, Department of Government and Politics of Jahangirnagar University narrated how Sufia Kamal grew up in an extremely orthodox family but stood out as a forerunner of communal harmony.
The poet always talked about the empowerment of oppressed people through her writings, as she believed that awakening of that group would ensure the establishment of human rights in the society.
“Not only that, throughout her life she expressed that only empowerment of women could liberate the captive humanity, she added.
