UNB, Dhaka :
Paying glowing tributes to the memory of noted parliamentarian Dr Aleem-Al-Razee, renowned author Dr Hayat Mamud has said Dr Razee should be remembered for his outstanding contributions as a political leader who had fought untiringly and unflinchingly to foster democracy, social justice and human rights in Bangladesh.
He expressed this view at a programme on Wednesday marking the promotion of a memorial book on Dr Aleem-Al-Razee, titled
‘Dr Aleem-Al-Razee Smarakgrantha’ at Kashbon Prokashon stall at Ekushey Book Fair in the capital.
The book, jointly edited by Aminul Islam and Mohammad Zohurul Islam, was published by the Kashbon Prokashon.
Dr Hayat, also an educationist said, “I consider Dr Razee as a liberal, progressive thinker, and social activist and reformer who through his exemplary life, noble words and deeds sought to arrest moral decadence and combat social backwardness.”
Thanking the Kashbon Prokashon for publishing the book, he hoped that the book on Dr Razee would whet the appetite of the curious and enlightened booklovers. The premature demise of Dr Razee at the age of 60 years left a void in political, cultural and intellectual world, Hayat concluded.
Speaking on the occasion, United News of Bangladesh (UNB) chairman Amanullah Khan said Dr Razee’s most significant achievement was when as an independent MNA (Member of National Assembly) had most forcefully raised in parliament the issues of discrimination and disparity between the Bangalees and the people of the then West Pakistan through an array of statistics and legal arguments that later helped ignite the spirit of glorious Liberation War in 1971.
In the post-liberation Bangladesh, he continued his opposition to and resistance against military rules and dictatorships that eventually led to restoration of democratic order which is still largely intact and uninterrupted, Khan observed.
Referring to Dr Razee’s political ideology, he pointed out that Razee was a passionate advocate of tolerance and respect for other’s viewpoints and opinions in politics. Exercise and practice of such discretion would prove to be effective in resolving the current political confrontation, violence and terror activities, he opined.
