‘Tremendous success achieved in MDGs’

Speaker of the Jatiya Sangsad Dr Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury MP, said the present government has tremendous success in achieving Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) and development.
The present government led by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has become successful achieving the unprecedented success in women empowerment, reducing child and maternal deaths, ensuring education for the girl children, she said.
“Many countries in this region are lacking behind Bangladesh in achieving the MDGs”, she said this on Thursday while addressing a workshop on ‘Reducing Maternal Mortality and Morbidity by Eliminating Child Marriage’ at Pirganj upazila auditorium in Pirganj upazila town as the chief guest.
Bangladesh Parliament Secretariat and United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) Bangladesh jointly organised the workshop with Senior Secretary of the Parliamentary Board Association Ashraful Mokbul in the chair.
Member of the Parliament from Rangpur-2 constituency Abul Kalam Md. Ahsanul Chowdhury Deuk, Additional Secretary A.E.M. Golam Kibria, Deputy Commissioner Rahat Anwar, Police Super Abdur Razzaque, Pirganj upazila Awami League (AL) president Motaharul Haque Bablu, its General Secretary Tanzibul Islam Shameem, Pirganj Upazila Nirbahi Officer ATM Ziaul Islam, President of Upazila Union Chairman Samity Shah Salek and General Secretary of Upazila Mohila AL Mahmuda Begum addressed as special guests.
Hundreds of students from different educational institutions under Pirganj upazila, their guardians, teachers, union parishad chairmen and members, civil society members, socio-cultural and political activists, professionals participated at the workshop. The Speaker put special emphasis on combined efforts to assist the government for achieving the MDGs.
Putting emphasis on identifying the reasons behind child marriage, she said the present government has taken various programmes for preventing early marriage. “The government has stressed on women empowerment, female education and launched community clinics in rural areas for ensuring health services for the grassroots level women,” she said.
She said four unions in Pirganj upazila have been freed from child marriage and added that the women community that is half of the country’s total population must be involved with all sorts of development activities to take nation ahead.
Earlier, the Speaker inaugurated the newly built Library of Pirganj Press Club (PPC), visited PPC, exchanged views with local journalists there and inaugurated the three-day Fruit Tree & Agriculture Technology Fair-2015 at Pirganj upazila parishad premises as the chief guest.
Later in the afternoon, she attended a huge rally, organised by Pirganj Upazila Animal Resources Office at its premises with Deputy Commissioner Rahat Anwar in the chair. She distributed prizes and Identity Cards among the livestock farmers and fishermen.
The speaker also distributed sub-stipends among students belonging to the ethnic minority communities on the occasion.
Besides, the Speaker distributed laptops and tabs among 28 poor meritorious students, gave prizes among persons under ‘One House, One Farm’ project and handed over keys among people under the ‘Jami Achhee, Ghar Nai’ project on the occasion.
