Wounded workers in a fire incident at a juice factory in Rupganj under Narayanganj have been given financial assistance for treatment from the Bangladesh Workers Welfare Foundation Fund under the Ministry of Labour and Employment.
Labour and Employment Secretary KM Abdus Salam handed over cheques of Taka 50,000 to each of three wounded workers who are undergoing treatment at Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) here on Saturday.
Treatment aid has also been handed over to seven wounded workers who are undergoing treatment at a private hospital in Rupganj on Saturday afternoon.
Cheques of total Tk 11 lakh have been given for 22 injured workers who are receiving treatment at DMCH and the private hospital in Rupganj. Each of them got Tk 50,000 while cheques of Taka 2 lakh have been given for each family of three deceased whose identities have been known. The cheques of financial assistance will be reached to families of three deceased on Sunday.
After handing over the cheques to wounded workers, the labour secretary said each family of deceased workers will be given Taka 2 lakh from the Labour Welfare Foundation Fund after ensuring the identities of the deceased.
About allegations of child labour in the juice factory, he mentioned that they have an own method in factory inspection system and they will look into the matter. If it is proven, actions will be taken as per labour act, he added.
DMCH Director Brigadier General Nazmul Haque said highest treatment is being given to wounded workers free of cost at DMCH. All of the workers who are undergoing treatment here are out of risk now and they are doing well, he said.
Inspector General of Department of Inspection for Factories and Establishments Md Nasir Uddin Ahmed, Director General of Department of Labour Goutom Kumar and concerned officials of the ministry and the two departments were present during the handing over of the cheques.
