Trawler laden with Jatka seized in Sharankhola by coastguards

Coastguards seized a fishing trawler named FB. Gazi-2 laden with jatka (hilsa less than nine inches long) in a channel of the river Baleswar under Sharankhola Upazila in Bagerhat district on Wednesday evening.
On Thursday afternoon, the seized trawler was brought to Rajair fish landing centre (under the same Upazila) where a mobile court was conducted by Sardar Mostafa Shahin, Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) and Executive Magistrate of Sharankhola fined the driver of the trawler of Tk.5 thousand and passed an order to distribute the seized Jatka hilsa in the different orphanages of the Upazila.
M Habibur Rahman, Coastguards Commander of Kachikhali (under Sharankhola Forest Range in the Eastern Division of Sundarbans) said members of a coastguards contingent (Western Zone) deployed Mongla were discharging their scheduled patrol duties in the river Baleswar on Wednesday evening. At that time they found the jatka laden fishing trawler and asked it to stop.
But it did not comply with the order and tried to flee away. Then the members of the coastguards chased and caught it along with 15 fishermen. The trawler is belonging to fish trader Wares Gazi of village Kathaltala under Patharghata Upazila in Barguna district and the fishermen of the trawler hail from Potkakhali area under Sadar Upazila of the district.
Sardar Mostafa Shahin, UNO and Executive Magistrate of Sharankhola Upazila said, Forkan Mia, the driver of the trawler was convicted to pay a fine of Tk.5 thousand in default to suffer imprisonment for 15 days under Fishery Act. Besides, the seized jatkas were distributed to all the orphanages of the upazila.
