Chittagong Bureau :
Transport workers have decided to go on strike in greater Chittagong on Jan 18 and 31 to demand a withdrawal of cases against their leaders on ‘false’ charges.
A Bangladesh Road Transport Workers Federation handout said on Wednesday the strike on Jan 18 would be from 6am to 2pm and for the whole day on Jan 31.
The federation’s Chittagong Regional Committee, President Mohammad Musa, alleged that police had tried to drop the names of those ‘actually’ involved in the abduction of Human-hauler Chittagong City Road Transport Workers Union General Secretary Nurul Islam.
He said the strike had been called to protest this attempt and to demand the withdrawal of other ‘false’ cases against their leaders. The transport workers had called a strike after Nurul Islam was allegedly abducted on Aug 19.He was found two days later. Musa alleged police were trying to portray the incident as a ‘staged drama’ in the final investigation report.
Musa said ‘miscreants’ attacked the Chittagong Auto-rickshaw and Tempo Workers Union office six months ago.
Those who tried to take control of the office sued the leaders of that organisation later, he alleged, and demanded the withdrawal of the case.
