Thousands of commuters are stranded in Rajshahi after bus owners went on an indefinite strike demanding three-wheelers be kept off the highways.
No buses operated on 16 routes from Rajshahi to Natore, Naogaon and Chapainawabganj since 6am on Sunday.
Many people were seen waiting for buses at various places. The district transport workers’ union says the local administration has ignored its demand to stop three-wheelers from plying on the highways.
“We did not have a choice,” its General Secretary Mahatab Hossain Chowdhury said about the strike.
Agitated workers demonstrated at the city’s Shiroil bus terminal in the morning.
The situation turned chaotic as workers tried to stop three-wheelers from running, Boalia Police Station OC Shahadat Hossain Khan said. Police intervened and took control of the situation.
Khan says they are trying to negotiate with the workers, who have threatened to continue the agitation until their demands are met.
