Transplantation of Boro seedling begins in northern districts

The farmers have started transplantation of Boro seedling with huge enthusiasm at most places in the northern districts to make the fixed farming programme successful during the current Rabi season.
According to the Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) sources, the farmers have prepared seedbeds and are taking all-out preparations for transplantation of Boro seedling in full swing from the third and fourth week of this month.
Horticulture Specialist of the DAE Khondker Md. Mesbahul Islam said transplantation of Boro seedlings would get momentum soon as the farmers are not facing any major hurdle now amid favourable climatic conditions.
The DAE, Bangladesh Agriculture Development Corporation, Bangladesh Rice Research Institute, Bangladesh Agriculture Research Institute, Barind Multipurpose Development Authorities, Teesta Barrage Project, Power Development Board, Rural Electrification Board and other concerned organisations have taken adequate steps to make Boro cultivation programme successful.
The concerned authorities of different departments and organisations have taken necessary preparations to ensure smooth supply of diesel, power or fertilisers as a part of the comprehensive steps taken by the government.
According to the DAE sources, the government has fixed a record target of producing over 1.89 crore tonnes of clean Boro rice from 4.78 lakh hectares of land in the country during the current 2014-2015 Boro season.
Under the programme, a target of producing over 63.69 lakh tonnes of Boro rice, 33.56 percent of the fixed national production target, has been fixed for the northern region, commonly known as the country’s food granary, this season,
The farmers will bring over 15.99 lakh hectares land under Boro cultivation in the northern region to attain the fixed farming target and they have already completed preparation of Boro seedbeds and started transplantation of the seedling.
Of them, over 10.68 lakh tonnes hybrid Boro rice will be produced from over 2.26 lakh hectares land, 52.86 lakh tonnes high yielding variety rice from over 13.65 hectares and 21,813 tonnes local variety rice from 10,589 hectares land in the northern region.
Rangpur Regional Acting Additional Director of the DAE Zulfiquer Haider said comprehensive and well- coordinated steps have been taken for delivering of the latest technologies to the farmers for enhancing Boro rice production at lower costs.
The farmers will largely adopt the latest conservation agriculture (CA)-based technologies, including Alternate Wetting and Drying (AWD) method of irrigation, in farming Boro this season to reduce lifting of underground water and save electricity.
Noted rice scientist and Associate Director- Agriculture of BRAC International (South Asia & Africa) Dr M A Mazid suggested for adoption of the CA-based technologies, including AWD, to produce more Boro rice saving farming costs and huge resources.
