100 injured in Lalmonirhat: Agitated people vandalise Station Master's office, damage other valuables

Bangladesh Railway authorities have suspended its two officials on charge of negligence in their duty, following the head-on collision between two trains in Lalmonirhat district on Saturday morning. The suspended officials are- Kakina Station Master Asir Uddin and Pointsman Nazir Hossain.
At least 100 passengers of both the trains were injured when the trains collided head-on at a level crossing at Kakina Railway Station under Kaliganj upazila of the district. The passengers were injured while trying to get down from the trains hurriedly.
The injured were rushed to Kaliganj Upazila Health Complex, Lalmonirhat Sadar Hospital and Rangpur Medical College Hospital.
Railway sources said that the accident took place when a Burimari-bound commuter train crashed into a Lalmonirhat-bound local train at the station while crossing the level crossing, suspending train movement on the Lalmonirhat-Burimari route.
Train service on the route remained suspended for three and a half hours after the accident.
Soon after the accident, mobs went on a rampage at the Kakina Railway Station and damaged its several windowpanes, office equipment and others valuables. The agitated people also vandalised the office of the Station Master. They staged demonstration in the rail station following the incident.
A four-member probe committee, headed by Divisional Traffic Sergeant Mostafizur Rahman, was formed to investigate the reason behind the accident, said Lalmonirhat divisional railway manager Nazmul Hasan.
He also said that the probe body was asked to submit report within 12 hours.
Nazmul Hasan visited the spot following the incident. He said that those responsible would have to face action after the report is filed.
He also said that such an accident could take place only due to negligence of a Station Master and a Pointsman.
Tahidar Rahman, driver of the commuter train, blamed the Kakina Railway Station Master for the accident.
