Traffic rules play key role to reduce road accident

Speakers at a view-sharing meeting said abiding by road traffic rules and regulations could be effective means of a substantial and sustainable reduction of road accidents
that claimed around 4,000 lives and injured scores every year in the country. Addressing the meeting titled ‘Enhancement of Road Safety and Mass-awareness’ at Seroil Bus Stand as chief guest, Shafiqul Islam, Commissioner of Rajshahi Metropolitan Police (RMP), said yesterday if the drivers drive their vehicles sincerely and carefully the existing number of road traffic accidents could be reduced to a greater extent.
District unit associations of all motor vehicles owners and employees organized the meeting. “To Abide by the Traffic Rules, to contribute to build an accident-free society” was the main theme of the meeting. With Tofayel Ahmed, deputy commissioner (Traffic) of RMP, in the chair, Mayor-in-charge of Rajshahi City Corporation Nizam-Ul Azim, general secretary of Road Transport Group Mahtab Chowdhury, transport owner Abul Kalam and president of truck labourers association Saidul Islam also spoke. RMP Commissioner Shafiqul Islam told the meeting that government has taken initiatives to launch training institute in each district of the country to bring the drivers under training.
Step has also been taken to incorporate the issue of road accident and its causes and prevention in the course-curriculum besides other various programmes to reduce the country’s road accidents by 50 percent within the next 15 years, he added.
He said the country experiences over 5,000 road accidents every year that claim over 4,000 lives and injure a huge number of people. The total loss of properties in the accidents is estimated to over Taka 5000 crore which is 2 percent of the country’s GDP.
RMP chief urged the drivers to stop their reckless driving and to remain absent in driving vehicles in drunken condition as value of life is always more than time.
