Traffic jam makes civic life miserable in Port City

Long tailbacks of traffic for hour after hour have made civic life in port city Chittagong miserable. Most of the city roads remain clogged with vehicles for long hours. The traffic system of the city has already been collapsed as the vehicles can’t run on the main roads of the port city Chittagong due to traffic jam.
Inadequate public vehicles like city service buses, lack of parking places, shortage of roads, occupying of footpaths by the hawkers and shopkeepers, non-coordination of concerned organizations including Chittagong Development Authority (CDA), Chittagong Metropolitan Police (CMP) and Chittagong City Corporation (CCC) are the prime causes of the traffic congestion here in Chittagong, conscious circles opined.
Sources said nobody can reach their respective destination in time due to traffic jam. The main points of the city e.g. New Market, Station Road, GEC point, WASA point, Muradpur, Bohadderhat, Sholoshahar, Choukbazar, Chittagong College area, Jamal Khan road, Anderkillah, Agrabad, Barik Buildings, Fakirhat, Chittagong Port gate area, Pahartoli, Alonker point, Katgor Bazar, Steel Mills Bazar, CEPZ point, Saltgolla, Kotowli point, Karnaphuli Bridge area, Kalurghat area, Oxygen point, Chittagong University area, Kajirdewari, Lalkhan Bazar and other important points of the port city are the major spots for traffic jam. The traffic department of Chittagong Metropolitan Police (CMP) is apparently unable to do anything substantial to control traffic congestion in the port city.
According to survey report of Forum for Planned Chittagong, there are no adequate public vehicles and roads for the 55 lakh of city dwellers and more than ten lakh of visitors who came to Chittagong from rural areas and other districts every day.
The survey report said, of the total roads, rickshaws and CNG-run auto rickshaws occupy 76 percent while the cars and microbuses are using rest 24 percent of roads. Besides, both sides of most of the roads in the city are being used for parking, as there are no parking places along with offices or high-rise buildings or markets.

Two lakh garment workers are engaged in CEPZ who are regular passenger of public vehicles. Besides, according to BGMEA, more than five lakh garment workers are working outside CEPZ. Moreover, more than two lakh regular office goers have to suffer for the lack of vehicles as well as traffic congestion. Besides, several lakh of school students and their guardians are also suffering for traffic congestion here in Chittagong.
