Traffic congestion turns worse in Ctg ahead of Eid

Traffic congestion on most of the city streets in the port city has intensified from the end of 3rd week of Ramadan, causing unbearable sufferings to the commuters and city dwellers.
Gridlock of transports are being witnessed in each and every thoroughfares in the city. The major gridlock of transpsorts are witnessed in Bahadarhat, Chowkbazar , Solasahar junction, GEC Circle, Nasirabad, Lalkhan Bazar Dewan Hat, Agrabad Pathantooly area and port connecting road & EPZ crossing, a eye witness sources said. The congestions also intensified from Thursday , the last working d ay of the govt officials and the financial institutions and the home bound people seen rushing to t heir desired home destinations .
Traffic Department of Chittagong Metropolitan Police (CMP) could not control the gridlocks even after taking special measures, deploying additional traffic police and giving additional duties to its officials at significant points from 12th of the Ramadan.
The traffic police held the increasing number of seasonal rickshaw pullers ahead of the Eid as the main cause behind the gridlocks in the city.
Besides, one of the reasons of congestions caused by the unplanned road construction works of city corporation and WASA pipe line installation works in Bakalia and Chowkbazar area during the month of holy month of Ramadan , different quarters blamed. Construction of flyover from Muradpur to Lalkhan Bazaar also hampering easy movement of transports.
The commuters, shoppers as well as pedestrians were forced to remain stranded on the city streets for hours specifically in Bakalaia and Chowkbazar area due to digging of road for pipe installation and city corporation road construction works.
The rush on the roads starts increasing from 2 pm mainly due to the shopping crowd and turns into a jam-packed state from 5 pm to 7 pm as during this period, the city dwellers come out of their house to buy iftar items.
Besides, the staff and workers of different govt , non-govt offices and factories rush to their homes during this period boarding rickshaws and other vehicles to join the iftar , which further make the city roads jam-packed.
Traffic police sources said rampant occupying of footpaths on different important roads by the hawkers and street vendors, makeshift outlets of different hotels and restaurants on the footpaths and streets are the major reasons behind the traffic congestion during the month of Ramadan.
The on-duty traffic personnel have virtually nothing to do for easing the traffic rather just witnessing the congestion.
Additional Deputy Commissioner of Chittagong Traffic police said they continued their efforts to ease sufferings to the commuters and city dwellers.
“Traffic department has taken additional measures giving additional duties to its officials to reduce the suffering of city dwellers after from third week of this holy month, he added.
