The price of edible oil did not decrease in the city’s retail market despite the government’s announcement that the prices would come down by Tk five per litre from Saturday.
Retailers said, they are selling edible oil at the previous rate because they purchased the present stock before the reduction decision was taken.
On Thursday, edible oil mill owners at a meeting with Commerce Minister Tofail Ahmed agreed to reduce the soybean oil price by Tk five per litre, but there is no effect thereof in the market.
Retailer Abdur Rahman, who sells edible oil at Mirpur Section-7, said, they are still purchaing oil at the previous rate from the wholesalers. That is why there is no result in the market.
He said, they are ready to respect the decision taken in the meeting with the commerce minister, but they cannot do it unless the wholesalers lower the price.
Another retailer Hannan Mallick of Karwan Bazar kitchen market said, the City Group only has reduced the prices of bottled soybean oil, but not the unpacked one.
He said, all the other brands of bottled soybean oil are being sold at the previous rate.
On Tuesday, a litre of Teer branded bottled soybean oil was being sold at Tk 95-97, Rupchanda at Tk 100 and Fresh at Tk 98 in the city’s kitchen markets.
A five-litre bottled soybean oil of Fresh and Teer brands was selling at Tk 465, Veola brand at Tk 480 and Rupchanda brand at Tk 485 on the day.
The unpacked soybean oil was retailing at Tk 88 to 90 a kilogram while palm oil was selling at Tk 65 a kg.
Commerce Secretary Hedayetullah Al Mamoon on Tuesday claimed while talking with The New Nation that the refiners had already lowered the price of edible oil by Tk 5 a litre from Thursday (January 13).
He said, “I hope within a very short time, consumers would get the benefit of the price reduction.”
The announcement came following a meeting between the Commerce Minister and leaders of Bangladesh Vegetable Oil Refiners and Vanaspathi Manufacturers Association at the ministry.
