Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) Mayor Sayeed Khokon on Wednesday said, traders in his area will have to sell onion at the price fixed by the government, otherwise, actions will be taken against them in accordance to the law.
He made the statement while conducting a drive at BUET market, near Plassey intersection on Wednesday.
Khokon said, “We have recently noticed that the price of onions has been inflating rapidly, making its affordability beyond people’s reach. Apart from that, the prices of other daily essentials remain reasonable and stable.”
The Mayor said, several reports were also published in newspapers over the surge of onion price.
Executive magistrates of DSCC launched special drives through mobile courts yesterday in order to curb the price hike of onion, said Uttam Kumar Roy, Public Relations Officer of DSCC.
“The drives will go on until the prices returns to normal. We will bring the market under control through strict monitoring,” the Mayor said.
If any wholesale dealers are found stocking onions, actions will be taken against him, the Mayor also warned with an expectation that the onion price will go down within the people’s purchasing capacity soon.
He also urged the people to buy only the necessary quantities of onions to avert pressure on the supply.
TCB has started Open Market Sales (OMS) of onion at Tk 45 per kilogramme across the country from September 30.
Sayeed also mentioned that the supply of onions in the market is enough, therefore asking the general people to not buy huge quantities of onions as it can create a crisis in the market. The Mayor said, the government has fixed the price of both local and Indian onions at a price range of Tk 96 to Tk 108 per kg.
