Traders fined Tk 1.10 lakh over hiking onion price

A monitoring team of commerce ministry on Friday fined traders of Shyambazar in the capital Tk one lakh and 10 thousand on the charge of hiking onion price and breaching rules by not displaying price lists.
“As per the wholesale association of Shambazar, price of imported onion from Turkey, Egypt and China has been fixed for Tk 60 per kg. The item imported from Myanmar is Tk 80-85 per kg.
But a section of dishonest traders are violating the decision and hiked prices. We have fined them,”
Abdul Jabbar Mondol, Assistant Director of Consumers’ Rights Protection Directorate said it to a group of journalists.
He said, Nagor Banijjalay, Amanat Bhandar and New Banijjalay each have been fined Tk 20 thousand in cases of not displaying price lists.
On the other hand, Alhajj Banijjalay has been fined Tk 50 thousand for selling onion at hiked price.
Abdul Jabbar Mondol said, the drive of the monitoring team will be continued.
“Mainly we have conducted awareness drive to alert traders not to hike price and not to start selling without displaying price lists,” he said.
“Shortly we will conduct more drives and will take stern action against those who violate the rules,” the Assistant Director said.
Officials from home ministry, agriculture ministry, food ministry and industry ministry and from Dhaka South City Corporation were present.
