UNB, Chuadanga :
Two policemen and a journalist were injured in an attack allegedly by some businessmen when a mobile court on Saturday fined two of them at Nicher Bazar wholesale market in the town for selling onion at excessively high price.
Executive magistrate and NDC Sibbir Ahmed and executive magistrate Amjad Hossain conducted the drive at the wholesale market.
“Evidence of selling onion at a high price as well as goods without displaying the price list was found against the traders. Nafisa Traders was fined Tk 20,000 and Jahangir Traders was slapped with a Tk 10,000 fine during the drive,” Sibbir Ahmed said.
Witnesses said the businessmen got furious after they were fined and confined the two executive magistrates.
When the members of police tried to intervene, they were assaulted while a local journalist was attacked by the agitated businessmen when he tried to take a picture of the incident.
Later additional police rescued the magistrates and those who participated in the drive. S M Shafayet, the injured journalist, was admitted to the Chuadanga Sadar Hospital.
Expressing his disappointment at the incident that occurred while monitoring the market, Nazrul Islam Sarker, Deputy Commissioner of Chuadanga said legal action will be taken in this regard.
Terming the incident unwanted Chuadanga distirct Shop Owners Association general secretary Ibrul Hasan Joardar Ibu said the situation was created due to misunderstanding.
