Traders at Dhaka International Trade Fair are hopeful about doing brisk business this year as they got overwhelming response from customers and visitors on the second day.
The dust-free environment also delights visitors. Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina inaugurated the month-long trade fair on Friday.
Not all the stalls were not ready on the first day and yet, large numbers of visitors thronged the venue.
This year 553 stalls have been set up and of them, 56 stalls and pavilions are selling foreign products.
Akramuzzaman Apu, Pavilion In-Charge of Walton Electronics said The Daily New Nation that compared with previous two years, arrangements and environment were better this time.
“The number of visitors on the first day itself was overwhelming,” he said. He is sanguine about doing good business only if political situation remains stable.
“Last year there were shutdowns and blockades from Saturdays to Thursdays. Business suffered due to the political instability. Though the duration of the trade fair was increased on the request of traders, around Tk 100,000-150,000 was charged extra,” he said.
A student of Dhaka University, Alamgir Hossain, said prices of products are a little less at the trade fair, which is why people wait for it throughout the year.
He purchased a blazer for a guest who came from his village home and said by the middle of the fair the price of it might come down to as low as even Tk 1,000.
According to a sales representative of JM Classic Fashion Limited, the number of visitors on the first day was encouraging.
They did some business on the first day itself and after a few days, the authorities might allow discounts, he said.
The crowd in front of a locally built bicycles stall, ‘Duranto Bicycles’ was striking. Kamal Hossain, an official with the manufacturer, said they sold two small bicycles in the evening.
He said at the trade fair, they are offering 10 percent discount and have launched three new advanced bicycles. These models will soon be launched in the market.
Businessman Tofael Ahmed bought one small bicycle for his daughter for Tk 4,700.
“I have been contemplating to buy a bicycle for the past few days. Today I bought it without really bothering about discounts,” he said.
