Thousands of tourists from home and abroad have swarmed Cox’s Bazar sea beach to celebrate the New Year-2017 that began on Sunday.
All of the 550 hotels, motels, rest houses and rented flats here have already been jam-packed. Of the hotels and motels, 25 are of five-star standard and others of three-star standard, sources said.
Accommodation facilities in the hotels are 100,000 which have already crossed to 200,000, thanks to prevailing favourable weather condition. Besides, accommodation for 100,000 more tourists are available at Inani, Teknaf and Saint Martin which also crossed to over 150,000, sources informed.
Because of accommodation crisis, some tourists have also set up temporary tenants on the sea beach.
While talking to this correspondent, they said, “We have set up tents to enjoy the beauty of the sea beach.”
“Most of the hotels, motels and rest houses have been booked for New Year celebrations,” Abul Kashem Sikder, general secretary of Cox’s Bazar Hotel-Motel Owners’ Association, told journalists.
Hotel and motel owners also accommodated additional tourists at the conference rooms or auditoriums so that tourists could celebrate the 31st night, he said.
Meanwhile, some tourists set up tents to celebrate the ‘beach night’ on the 31st night.
“We also encouraged tourists to enjoy ‘beach night’ for saving expenditures during New Year celebrations, he said.
Around 5,000 tourists arrived Cox’s Bazar from India and other neighbouring countries, he informed. “We are satisfied with this year’s booming tourism business,” he said.
He also informed that they arranged security for tourists through community policing and tourist police. Around 200 tourist police have been deployed to ensure security of tourists, he mentioned.
He also said that the owners of hotels and motels will arrange separate programmes to celebrate the New Year. This is because of an official ban on all kinds of beach programmes after sunset on December 31. “Basically, we got an opportunity to do good business for three months – November, December and January- the peak season of tourism,” he added.
Hotel and motel owners have already invested around Tk 12,000 crore to draw tourists to the world’s longest sea beach of Cox’s Bazar from home and abroad.
However, Abul Kashem expressed concern over the influx of Rohingya from Myanmar. They are erecting makeshift houses in different parts of hills between Cox’s Bazar and Inani which attracts tourists.
Meanwhile, the three-day long Mega Beach Carnival which began at Laboni Point on December 30 and ended on Saturday . Some prominent singers of the country rendered songs during the festival. The main motto of this carnival was to attract the tourists.
Senior Assistant Superintendent of Police Raihan Kazemi said they have special security arrangements for the tourists in Cox’s Bazar.
Police strengthened it monitoring at the tourist spots. Besides, tourist police were deployed in Cox’s Bazar sea beach and St Martin’s for ensuring the security and safety of tourists, he added.
