Tourism traders fear loss for unstable situation in Khagrachhari

Khagrachhari tourist town has worn festive look during the upcoming Eid-ul-Azha.
Tourist spots are also being decorated for the same purpose but they fear for losses due to unstable situation created by abduction, killing and disappearance in recent times.
District administration sources said there are many attractive tourist spots including Alu Tilla Parjatan Complex, Reechang natural waterfall, Debater Pukur (pond of God), Ramgorh tourist spot, Panchhari Aranya Kuthir, Krishi Gabeshana, Khagrachhari Hill District Park, Heritage Park, Dighinala hanging bridge, and river Chenghi and Mainee, etc.
Based on those tourists spots, about 120 hotels were established in Khagrachhari and neighbouring Sajek in Rangamati District.
In 2017, tourism sector achieved dynamism as huge tourists visited to enjoy the natural beauty of hilly district Khagrachhari. The tourists from other districts and foreigners visited different attractive places.The number of tourists in 2017 was over 70 to 80 thousand, who stayed at different hotels, motels and guest houses in the district. In this connection, local businessmen earned at least Tk 5 crore.
General Secretary (GS) of Khagrachhari Hotel Owners’ Association and Managing Director of Hotel Gairing Ananta Bikash Tripura said they have decorated their establishment and tourist spots welcoming tourists here. However, they did not get expected response from tourists due to unstable situation that include abduction, killings and disappearance.
“We didn’t make any profit during last Eid-ul-Fitr due to hill slides, flash flood and natural disasters. The upcoming Eid may not be profitable,” he added.Swapon Chandra Devnath, owner of Hotel Aranya Bilash, said they got expected tourists in 2017 but they are not getting them for the last six months.
“We can’t maintain the expenditure of our staffs and establishments,” he added.
He urged the authority concerned to ensure safety of tourists.
GS of local Transport Owners’ Association Mohammad Yunus Mia said about hundred different types of vehicles carry tourists but they are not getting expected number of tourists for the last six months due to unstable situation and natural disasters.
The transport owners will huge losses if expected tourists do not visit Khagrachhari during the upcoming Eid, he also said.
Mongla Marma, a local sales representative, said they have sold items worth over Tk 5 lakh in July and August of 2017. They have sold products of Tk one lakh in last two months, he also said.
Many visitors said Khagrachhari with its abundant biological loveliness and unusual location has become unsuccessful to draw more tourists due to lack of infrastructural amenities, communication and security.
Ali Ahmed Khan, superintendent of police said tourists are not available here for the last six months due to natural disasters and unstable situation. Police are alert and adequate security measures have been taken for both locals and foreign tourists.
To ensure better security, the infrastructural facilities have to be developed, he added.
