Tense situation after 7- murder: Tourism business dull in Khagrachhari

Businessmen involved with tourism sector have been counting losses as expected tourists did not arrive here during Eid vacation due to tense situation that mounted after seven murders occurred recently.
Khagrachhari Hotel-Motel Owners’ Association sources said there are many tourist spots which include natural waterfall, cave, lakes, hills, valley and hilly rivers.
There are about 80 hotels in the district. Of those, 50 are located at Sajek, adjacent to Khagrachhari and controlled by the businessmen of Khagrachhari.
They get about 60,000 to 70,000 tourists during one week of Eid vacation and earn Tk 15 to 20 crore. But this year the figure of tourists did not exceed 10,000 to 15,000.
General Secretary (GS) of Hotel Owners’ Association Ananta Bikash Tripura said all hotel owners are counting losses due to unstable situation created over the abduction, disappearing, killings and extortion by some regional forums.
There were some bookings in all hotels, motels and guest houses during Eid vacation but all have been cancelled due to the seven murders happened at Swanirbhor Bazaar in the hill town on August 18, 2018.
All the reservations were cancelled due to insecurity, and no one is travelling to the insecure areas, he added.
President of the organisation Kalyan Mitra Barua expressed almost same views and added that nowadays the law and order situation has worsened.
Tourists are not interested to come to enjoy hilly beauties risking their life and properties in this continuous unstable situation. He urged authority concerned to take immediate security measures for tourists.
“If we can make profit then we can survive, otherwise we will have to change our business,” he added.
Transport Owners’ Association GS Mohammad Yunus Mia said there are about hundred different types of vehicles to carry tourists but they are also counting losses due to less flow of tourists.
Many transport owners has loaned money for buying vehicles on the condition of instalment but now they can’t pay instalment as there in no profit from the vehicles, he said.
He also blamed unstable situation for this problem and asked to ensure good law and order situation for tourists.
Superintendent of Police Ali Ahmed Khan said they have taken all measures to ensure security for tourists. All tourist spots were under the scanner of security forces.
He asked tourists not to feel insecure while visiting Khagrachhari.
