Outgoing US President Donald Trump has been impeached by the House of Representatives just days before leaving office, becomes the first president to be impeached for a second time. He was charged with misconduct in office for inciting a mob that stormed Congress last week after his repeated false claims of election fraud. Five people died, including a police officer, in the violence.
Earlier, Mr. Trump was also impeached by the House of Representatives in 2019 over his dealings with Ukraine, but acquitted by the Senate.
It is to be noted that the three previous impeachments – President Andrew Johnson, Bill Clinton and Trump – took months before a final vote, involving investigation in the House and hearings. But this time, it took just a week after Trump encouraged a crowd of his supporters who attacked the US Capitol.
As reported, all Democrats and 10 Republicans have voted to impeach President Trump on one charge, that is, incitement of insurrection. Most Republicans did not seek to defend Trump’s seditious act but called on Democrats
to drop impeachment for the sake of national unity. The Democrats showed determination and courage not to forgive such blatant assault on the very heart of democracy just to grab power unconstitutionally without election.
Those Republicans who turned a blind eye in defence of a president who is insane and most un-American and who used violence and murder to destroy democracy should be ashamed to talk of unity by saving the most dangerous enemy of democracy and everything else that has made America great. The real unity needed for the good of America and world is for the Democrats and the Republicans to distance themselves together from Trump and his likes.
