Life Desk :
So what are you wearing tonight – sheesham or teak? ‘Going with the grain’ is the new decree in the world of accessories…
Call it fusing old-school craftsmanship with modern style or simply blending raw nature with luxury, style artisans are using sustainable wood from all over the world to create woody wristwatches, eyewear, clutches and even bow ties! Diverse patterns such as argyle, plaid, polka dots, and more are laser-etched into the wood making it both increasingly unique and attractive.
Wear your wood
Where did it all begin? Wooden heels have long been a summer favourite and the trend gained momentum with the popularity of stylish clogs on the runway. “I would say the 90s or Grunge is making a comeback with wooden heels and other woody accessories,” says stylist Theia Tekchandani. Fine wooden pieces of accessory are much sought-after since they are both fashionable and versatile. Wood also means class and finesse.
Solid Variety
One can’t even fathom the varieties of wood being used for these haute add-ons. Right from Brazilian rosewood sunnies to premium sandalwood and ebony watches and stylish eye frames done in reclaimed wood, you need woody add-ons to rejig your wardrobe. “I have always had a fascination for wood. When I was thinking of ideas for my bags, this just came naturally to me. I use many other materials in combination with wood, like metal and acrylic,” says designer Rachana Reddy who has a great collection of wooden clutches. Her favourite woods are teak and rubber wood. Wood Works Inc, an online company based in India, has also graduated from retailing wooden furniture to designing luxe wooden style pieces. They make chic reading glasses, glares, bow ties and brooches in bamboo, rosewood and oak wood.
Sustainable trend
Most designers doing wooden fashion have nature in mind. Most of their products are made with recycled material – 100% natural, non-toxic and hypoallergenic. “Everyone wants earthy, natural materials these days. Homespun designers are creating cool accessories with uncommon and eco-conscious materials. Plastics and metals are not always the preferred sources for designers,” says Tekchandani.
