The fate of 2.25 lakh students has become uncertain as most of the relevant colleges in the city denied them admission into the Higher Secondary courses this session, though adequate number of seats still remained vacant in these institutions.
In contrary, the admission-seekers have been asked to get release slip and get admission into the colleges of the rural areas. As per new rules, the admission-seekers have to collect release slip from the Education Ministry through their colleges to take admission in other colleges.
Education Minister Nurul Islam Nahid, however, admitted the total mess in the admission system this year, but he apparently failed to show any headway to overcome the ongoing crisis.
“I’m sorry for the ‘hassles’ the candidates are facing over Class XI admission process for the academic session 2015-2016. No decision is yet taken for these 2.5 lakh students ,” Nahid said.
Meanwhile, a total of 12, 82,618 students have passed in Secondary School Certificate Examinations in this
year while about 10,45,000 students would get chance to admission into the colleges.
Sources said, there are several colleges where maximum seats are reportedly remained vacant till the date. But the college authorities have no scope to admit any students without the knowledge of the Education Ministry.
Principal of Dhaka City College Md Shahjahan told The New Nation. “City College is one of the best colleges in city for Commerce courses. The third merit list was published, but we cannot give admission to enough students. There are about 600 seats are still vacant.”
“The students applied to admit in the City College. We requested the Ministry officials to give some students to us. But the Ministry did not pay heed to our request. It is unexpected,” the Principal said.
Md Shahjahan said, if the same situation continues, we will be compelled to shut the college. Milestone College got 1,000 students while City College could not fulfil seats!
There are about 700 seats are vacant at Trust College in Uttara despite enough facilities for the students.
Principal of Trust College Bashir Ahmed Bhuiyan said there are 500 seats for Science, 150 for Commerce and 100 for Humanities are empty. “We are ready to admit the students,” he said.
There are widespread allegations that, some colleges showed fake admission of several students by collecting their information from different ways and also submitted the list to the Ministry. And strangely, the Ministry also approved the list.
Several students have categorically alleged that the colleges cheated with the students. Many of them expressed reluctant mood to get admission into these colleges and filed written complaints to the Ministry.
Shahriar Kabir Sejan told this correspondent that he took the release slip and applied for college. But he knew that he was nominated to admit at Shahjahan Ali College. He neither went there nor applied.
Dhaka Education Board College Inspector Ashfaqus Salehin said that many written allegations have been received in the Ministry. The Ministry has taken step to identify the colleges. “Stern action will be taken against these colleges,” he said.
It may be mentioned that the Education Ministry launched online admission system this year, which was a huge failure for the government as numerous students had to face technical difficulties due to shortcomings of the Ministry. They are still facing the problem.
“We have limited skills and capacities in terms of technology. And so, we have faced difficulties in publishing results and in the admission process for class XI this year,” the Education Minster also said.
