A 45-second devastating tornado destroyed at least 750 houses and hundreds of trees as well as crops in Char Gobindapur, Chinakhara and Hashempur villages of Sujanagar upazila in Pabna district on Monday evening. said Maksuda Siddika, Additional Deputy Commissioner (DC-Incharge) of the district.
About 250 people were injured. Of them, 47 were admitted to Pabna Sadar Hospital and Sujanagar Health Complex instantly, said.
As many as 950 people of 350 families became the victims of sudden tornado, Nor’wester and hailstorm. They lost their foods, shelters, clothes and crops, the ADC said.
The local administration sanctioned 30 kilos of rice, dry food, medicine and Tk 2,000 in cash for each of the victim families, she added.
“We will seek necessary bundles of tin and Tk 10 lakh from the government,” she further said.

They are living under open sky and asking for more relief, food, medicines and shelters as the sanctioned relief was insufficient. The victims need immediate help from relevant quarters for rehabilitation, he said.
Akass Ali, 55, from Char Gobindapur village, told The New Nation on Tuesday, “The tornado hit our village for just 45 seconds around 7:00pm razing the houses and trees to ground.”
He also said that it destroyed our houses, trees and crops and everything.
Another victim Asma Khatun, said “We are now homeless and we do not know whether we will get any help or relief from the government.”
Abul Hashem, a victim of Chinakhara village, said around 250 people were injured while trying to hurriedly leave their houses.
Meanwhile, a devastating tornado destroyed at least 350 houses and several hundreds of trees as well as crops in a Patalpur, Rasulpur and Dhatalpur villages of Sathia upazila, said Maksuda Siddika.
Local administration distributed relief and food among the victims on Tuesday morning, she said.
The local representatives and other personalities as well as institutions were seen to provide foods and relief among the victims, she added.
