Tornado damages 2500 houses in Mongla

A number of thatched dwelling houses were damaged and a huge number of trees were uprooted in Joymoni area under Mongla Upazila in Bagerhat district when a tornado swept over the area on Tuesday afternoon, according to a report received here. During the tornado a woman named Rehena was injured by lightning. Another tornado also swept over the same area on Monday afternoon. As a result, some 250 thatched houses were damaged. On the other hand, 2 fishermen were injured by a lightning during the tornado. One of them named Shafiqul Islam (30) died and his dead body was recovered from the river on the following day.
Md Nahiduzzaman, PIO (Project Implementation Officer) of Mongla Upazila disclosed, the dead body of fisherman Shafiqul Islam (30) who was injured by lightning on Monday during the tornado, fell into the river and missing was recovered on the following day from Sundartala area. According to the PIO, a sum of Tk.20 thousand will be given to his family from Bagerhat district administration. He was the son of one Kashem Shaikh of village Katakhali of Joymoni area. The PIO also disclosed, tornado affected families will be given rice CI sheets and cash Taka. But the loss of properties damage by the tornado on Tuesday is being ascertained by the concerned authorities.
On the other hand, Al-haj Abdul Khalek Talukdar, former MP of Rampal-Mongla Constituency in Bagerhat district and newly elected Mayor of KCC (Khulna City Corporation) visited the tornado affected Joymoni area on Tuesday morning. He told, all the tornado affected families will be given relief goods by the Government for their rehabilitation.
