India has a rich history of forts and they are a great attraction for tourists as well. The exquisite palaces and forts are prized treasures of India. Let’s take a look at India’s top five must visit forts:
Agra Fort
Agra Fort was originally a brick fort known as Badalgarh and is a UNESCO world heritage site in Agra, UP.
Sikandar Lodi was the first Sultan of Delhi who shifted to Agra and lived in the fort.
Two of the fort’s gates are notable: the ‘Delhi Gate’ and the ‘Lahore Gate.’
Mehrangarh Fort:
If you love Rajasthan, don’t forget to see the gigantic Mehrangarh fort in Jodhpur, which is one of the largest forts in India.
A little more than 500 years old, the fort’s museum is one of the best kept. Inside the fort one can look out for Sheesha Mahal, Moti Mahal etc.
Interestingly, one will be happy to know that it’s a popular site for shooting and was one of the filming locations for the Hollywood movie ‘The Dark Knight Rises’ released in June 2012.
Nahargarh Fort Jaipur :
Remember the superhit film ‘Rang De Basanti’? Some of the epic scenes by Aamir Khan were shot in the Nahargarh fort.
Built in 1734 by Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh II, the fort stands on the edge of the Aravalli hills overlooking the pink city of Jaipur.
Very few people know that it was earlier known as Sudershan fort and the name was later changed to Nahargarh fort.
Red Fort:
Speaking of Indian forts, we cannot miss the historic Red fort that stands in the capital city.
Built by the Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan, Lal Quila or Red fort is one of the most famous monuments of India and is a recognised heritage sites.
For about 200 years, the Red Fort was home to the Mughal Emperor. The most-important surviving structures are the walls and ramparts, the main gates, the audience halls and the imperial apartments. The Independence Day function and the flag hoisting takes place at the Red Fort.
Jaisalmer Fort:
The golden city of India- Jaisalmer, has one of the world’s largest fort i.e. the Jaisalmer fort built by Rawal Jaisal and is a world heritage site.
Because of the magnificent yellow sandstone walls the fort is also known as the Golden fort or Sonar Quila.
