Bangladesh Federal Union of Journalists (BFUJ) held a human chain demanding trial of Sagar-Runi murder in front of the Jatiya Press Club on Tuesday after two years of the tragedy.
Dhaka Reporters’ Unity (DRU) will observe a daylong token hunger strike on March 31 demanding exemplary punishment to the killers of journalist couple Sagar Sarowar and
Meherun Runi.
“We will call for tougher movement if our demand is not met by this time,” DRU President Shahed Chowdhury announced it during a memorial organised on the occasion of the second death anniversary of the journalist couple. While addressing the programme at DRU’ Sagar-Runi auditorium, Sagar’s mother Saleha Munir alleged that the government delayed the investigation instead of revealing the fact.
“Now, I am sick. Shall I be able to see that justice has been done to our family?” she questioned. She asked the journalists to go ahead with the movement to unearth the motive in order that the killers are awarded exemplary punishment.
Information Minister Hasanul Haq Inu yesterday expressed deep regret at the delay in unearthing the motive behind the killing of journalist couple.
“I shall talk to the home ministry to dig out the reason behind the killings,” Inu said it at a press briefing in his ministry. Sagar, News Editor of the private TV channel Maasranga, and his wife Runi, a Senior Reporter of ATN Bangla, were murdered at their West Rajabazar residence in the capital on February 11, 2012.
