Commerce Minister Tofail Ahmed on Thursday urged India to take steps for removing all tariff and non-tariff barriers to trade so Bangladesh can increase export to the neighbouring country.
“The bilateral relations between Bangladesh and India are very good. India should remove all trade barriers on the basis of reality,” he said while addressing as the chief guest at the inaugural ceremony of the fourth edition of “Indo-Bangla Trade Fair-2017” at Sonargaon Hotel in the city.
India-Bangladesh Chamber of Commerce and Industry (IBCCI) with support of the High Commission of India in Dhaka organised the three-day fair to provide opportunity for the businesses from Bangladesh and India to showcase their products and to connect with each other.
Indian High Commissioner to Bangladesh Harsh Vardhan Shringla and Federation of Bangladesh Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FBCCI) President Abdul Matlub Ahmed were present as special guests. IBCCI President Taskeen Ahmed presided over the function.
Tofail thanked India for its contribution during the Liberation War and said India should come forward to increase the bilateral investment and trade between the two countries.
Harsh Vardhan Shringla said IBCCI has been playing an important role in promoting India-Bangladesh trade and commercial ties.
In November last year, he said, IBCCI organized a fruitful discussion on enhancing India-Bangladesh Waterways Connectivity which saw good participation from both the countries.
“In an important development in waterways or sea connectivity between India and Bangladesh, first container ship will arrive from Kolkata to Pangaon Inland Container Terminal tomorrow under the Coastal Shipping Agreement between our two countries,” he added.
Harsh Vardhan Shringla also said the trade fair is a great effort from IBCCI to further promote the bilateral commercial ties between the two countries.
Around 60 companies from diverse sectors including automobiles, pharmaceuticals and chemicals of Bangladesh and India participated in the Fair.
The fair will remain open from 1O am to 7 pm every day.
