Commerce Minister Tofail Ahmed on Wednesday said that the implementation of Bangladesh China India Myanmar Economic Corridor (BCIM-EC) would reduce country’s trade gap with India and China.
“If the BCIM-EC implemented, it would help in getting easy access for Bangladeshi products to its market with the aim to reduce huge trade gap”, Tofail said this while addressing a meeting on ‘BCIM Economic Corridor: Harmonious South Asia’ at Centre on Integrated Rural Development for Asia and the Pacific (CIRDAP) auditorium in the city, organised by Bangladesh Shammoybadi Dal.
The Bangladesh-China-India-Myanmar Forum for Regional Cooperation (BCIM) is a sub-regional organisation of Asian nations aimed at greater integration of trade and investment between the four countries.
Stressing the importance of regional connectivity among the countries in South Asia, the commerce minister said BCIM-EC is an emerging opportunity for boosting economic cooperation in the region.
Tofail said total export earning of the country was $32.19 billion in the last fiscal 2013-14 and the government has set the export target of $33.20 billion for the current fiscal 2014-15. ‘BCIM-EC implementation can help the country to achieve its export target’, Tofail said.
Country’s trade gap with India and China is huge due to import of industrial raw materials,Tofail said and added that the proper implementation of BCIM-EC will help the country to reduce its trade gap.
The Bangladesh China India Myanmar Economic Corridor is an initiative conceptualized for significant gains through sub-regional economic cooperation within the BCIM, said Civil Aviation and Tourism Minister Rashed Khan Menon.
Information minister Hasanul Haque Inu said Bangladesh wants the implementation of the BCIM economic corridor, so it can open a new door between China and South Asia.
Ma Mingqian, China Ambassador lauded the progress, which Bangladesh has achieved over the last couple of years, and said China wanted to be a partner in the effort.
Deputy High Commissioner of India, Sanjib Charaborty, President of the Fedaration of Bangladesh Chamber of Commerce and Industries (FBCCI) Kazi Akramuddin Ahmed, President of Bangladesh- China Chamber Golam Dastogir Gaji, President of Bangladesh- Mayanmar KB Ahmed also addressed the meeting.
Bangladesh Shammoybadi Dal General Secretary Dilip Barua presided over the meeting.
